American Psycho is one of my favorite movies of all time. Throughout the film, the main character straddles the line between reality and psychosis. In making this title sequence, I wanted to evoke that same sense of disconnect. Each scene has multiple layers splitting apart or coming back together with themselves. Add the slowed down and distorted early 80’s hit, In the Air Tonight, and the result makes the watcher delightfully uncomfortable – staying true to the tone of the film.

The main character in the story, Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), struggles assimilating himself in the society around him. There is a feeling of disconnect in Bateman’s head and I wanted to convey that with this title sequence. I wanted the viewer to tour the streets of New York City through the eyes of Patrick Bateman – allowing them to feel the same kind of disconnect that is the basis for the story.

Although the story is about a serial killer struggling to deal with the societal norms of late 1980’s New York City, there is a comedic aspect to the story. I wanted to stay away from the comedic aspect and focus on the darker side of the film. The title sequence in the film is cheeky and playful. I wanted to do something very different – disturbing and dark.
