This world is a curious place. For centuries scientists have worked tirelessly to uncover the most mysterious truths of earth’s over 4 billion year history. Since 1976 Burnie’s Rock Shop has worked to bring those truths to anyone looking to Discover the Uncovered.

I wanted to evoke adventure with this design. I grew up in the Madison area and it was always a special occasion to go exploring at Burnie’s. I wanted to keep it rustic and curious. Something that would create a sense of wonder and mystery for the visitors of one of Madison’s most loved businesses.

I was inspired by great adventure films like Indiana Jones and National Treasure. I designed the landing page to resemble what I imagine a geologists messy desk may look like. Maps, paper and rocks overlapping each other in organized chaos.

In e-commerce it’s important to make it as easy as possible for the user to buy whatever they may want. I wanted the user to be able to find what they were looking for quickly, but I also wanted to create an environment where the user can spend hours perusing through all the varieties of rocks, minerals and fossils that Burnie’s has to offer.

I wanted this project to feel rustic, adventurous and trustworthy. I used textures to create a gritty, authentic feel. Couple that with the heavy font that I wound up using (Highgate), and the result is a design that offers both excitement and comfort.
